Europe Travel Cost Calculator: Know Your Trip Budget Before You Book
The Europe Travel Cost Calculator is a free tool that estimates the total cost of a European holiday — flights, accommodation, food, local transport, activities, Schengen visa fees and travel insurance — across 46 countries and 430+ destinations, converted into your own currency in real time.
Planning a trip to Europe is exciting, but costs can be hard to predict: a week in Switzerland can cost three times more than the same week in Albania, and peak-season prices in Santorini or Dubrovnik can be 30–35% higher than in shoulder season. This calculator solves that problem with destination-specific pricing for every major European city — from Paris, Rome and London to Istanbul, Reykjavík, Athens and Lisbon.
Whether you’re planning a honeymoon in Italy, an Interrail adventure, a family summer in Spain, or a budget backpacking trip through the Balkans, you’ll get a realistic total budget — with a per-day and per-person breakdown — in under three minutes. All figures are fully editable, so you can replace any estimate with a real quote you’ve found.
What makes this calculator different?
- 430+ European destinations: every major city plus tourist hotspots like Hallstatt, the Amalfi Coast, Cappadocia, Plitvice Lakes and the Isle of Skye.
- Three travel styles: Budget, Mid-range and Luxury tiers for hotels, food, transport and activities.
- Seasonal pricing: peak-season and low-season multipliers applied automatically from your travel dates.
- Visa and insurance included: Schengen visa fees (~€90) and daily travel insurance are pre-filled and editable.
- 25+ display currencies: EUR, GBP, CHF, PLN, SEK, NOK, TRY, INR and many more — auto-detected from your browser.

How to Use the Europe Travel Cost Calculator (7 Steps)
Most users complete all seven steps in under three minutes. Every field has a destination-based estimate pre-filled — you only edit what you want to change.
- Enter your trip details. Type your destination (e.g. “Rome, Italy”) and pick it from the suggestions. Set your departure and return dates — seasonal price adjustments apply automatically — then set the number of adults and children.
- Choose your travel style. Budget sets hostel-tier prices, Mid-range sets 3–4 star prices, and Luxury sets premium prices across hotels, food, transport and activities. You can override any category in later steps.
- Review transportation. The calculator shows a round-trip flight estimate per person for your destination. Edit the fare if you’ve found a real price, and add baggage, seat selection, airport transfers and intercity trains if needed.
- Set your accommodation. Pick a hotel tier to see the estimated nightly rate, then adjust the price per night and the number of rooms. Total = price × rooms × nights.
- Plan food costs. Use the destination’s per-meal estimates, or switch to a custom daily food budget. Children’s meals are discounted automatically (default 70% of the adult rate).
- Add activities, visa and extras. Add specific paid attractions (e.g. Louvre Museum, €22 × 2 people), check the pre-filled Schengen visa fee and insurance, add SIM cards or shopping, and set a 0–20% contingency buffer.
- Read your result. Your boarding-pass-style ticket shows the total, per-day and per-person costs, an estimated range, and a full category breakdown — ready to save, share or print.
Understanding Your Results
Here’s exactly what each part of your estimate means:
- Total trip cost: the headline number — the sum of all eight cost categories plus your contingency buffer, shown in your chosen currency.
- Per-day and per-person figures: useful for comparing against daily budget guides or splitting costs between travellers.
- Estimated range (±12%): travel prices fluctuate with demand and booking time. The range shows a realistic low and high — aim to budget near the upper end.
- Cost breakdown bars: each category (flights, accommodation, food, local transport, activities, visa, insurance, other & contingency) shown as a percentage of your total, so you can see instantly where your money goes.
- Budget check: a green (within budget) or red (over budget) verdict when you enter your own travel budget.
- Savings suggestions: specific, calculated savings — for example, how much you’d save switching from a mid-range hotel to budget accommodation for your exact dates and room count.
- Currency note: the exchange rate used is displayed under your ticket. Rates are fallback estimates unless a live currency feed is connected.

8 Proven Ways to Lower Your Europe Trip Cost
- Travel in shoulder season. April–May and September–October typically cost 10–15% less than June–August, with milder crowds.
- Book flights 2–3 months ahead. Long-haul fares to Europe usually hit their lowest point 8–12 weeks before departure.
- Use trains between cities. Eurail passes and early-booked high-speed trains (TGV, ICE, Frecciarossa) often beat flights once baggage fees and airport transfers are counted.
- Mix your accommodation. Splurge 2–3 nights in expensive cities and use budget stays elsewhere — the calculator’s What-If mode shows the impact instantly.
- Choose cheaper bases. Stay in Mestre instead of Venice, or Trastevere-side Rome instead of near the Spanish Steps, and save 30–50% per night.
- Eat lunch as your main meal. Many European restaurants offer fixed-price lunch menus at half the dinner price.
- Check free museum days. Many state museums in Italy, France and Spain offer free entry on the first Sunday of each month.
- Keep a 10% contingency. Our default buffer covers surprises — currency swings, missed connections, that extra gelato.
